I’ve recently received questions of a general nature re: topics for the research paper as well as how to integrate ethical concepts into the paper.
Recall that the universe of possible subjects is very broad (Meta’s perhaps deleterious effects- in the form of Instagram- on preteens girls; Vaccine and testing mandates on business coming from the current administration; whether strict liability is an appropriate standard for bars and taverns as such; etc.).
The subject can be as broad or as narrow as you like, and I don’t care what conclusion you come to, or even if you reach a conclusion (rather than, for example, merely exploring various aspects of a given question or controversy. For example, in the case of Meta, while it may be true that Instagram may be in some measure harmful, is it in some others beneficial? And if so, how do you figure those forces balance out? And in any case, even if on balance Instagram is harmful, should the market or government regulation address it?
As regards ethical principles covered in the course, recall that you can use all the concepts covered in the text. But take just two that we explicitly covered: whether the ends justify the means or whether the means have to themselves be justified independent of the end goal being sought.
Those two concepts/ways of thinking can be applied to the Instagram example. Meta is in business to make money. If psychologically harming your people is one way to make higher profits, is than means justified by the end? And of course these two concepts are almost begging to be applied to the Vaccine mandate question
